Mana is a source of daily living, necessity and sustenanceProudly made by South African women.

WHAT IS THE MANA PROJECT

As with every country in the world, COVID 19 has impacted entrepreneurs severely and South Africa is no different.

The objective of the Mana Project is to give mana - a source of daily living, necessity and sustenance - to the box maker and the receiver.
Mana boxes are layered with love and contain gorgeous handmade South African gifts - each with a story. The stories reveal the hardships of women in stark communities who make items to sustain themselves. They are about the businesses that employ these women and the unanticipated impact of Covid-19. They are about the sourcing of material - such as single-use plastic to make fashion products. And jewellery made from the steel fence that surrounded the Robben Island prison where Nelson Mandela was held captive.

Mana boxes have been compiled for quarterly subscriptions distributed to the United States. They are designed to give women a sustainable resource for daily living. This project enables women to help women artisans and women in business in communities impacted by Covid. For the recipient, the mana gift will remain a mystery until it is opened. Each box is an exquisite surprise. Its content, the rich stories, the imagery of its creators are beautifully woven together - to sustain the giver and the recipient.

As an added layer of love, each box contains a gift to share so that mana might spread farther.

STORIES

Stories are the essence of the Mana Project.

The stories are inspiring, moving and excruciating to hear. They are about the tenacity to survive against what seems insurmountable. They are about the beauty of women supporting other women. They are about Mana.

A community of homeless women who collect plastic which is recycled and then used by other women to make a briefcase or handbag. From waste to fashion, the environment is preserved and excess becomes an asset and a resource for socio-economic upliftment among disenfranchised people.

Sustainability grows along with the earnings of the waste pickers, thereby reducing poverty, vulnerability and dependence on the state.

Each mana box will hold a selection the stories of the 1800 women impacted positively by this project.

THE
PLAN
MANDELA DAY

In 2020, the essence of Mandela Day – take action, inspire change, and make every day a Mandela Day – is more important than ever before. Communities across the world are affected by the spread of Covid-19, which has hit every economy, causing new social and economic challenges and exacerbating old ones.

Mandela Day is celebrated on 18 July every year. In 2020, it will be the day we share the successes we have achieved and the lessons we have learned as we battle this pandemic, and its effect on those less fortunate than ourselves.
